THE VOCAL INSTRUMENT 101 LIVE
The Vocal Warrior, Elise Bessler did The Vocal Instrument 101 LIVE way back in January 2021 and here’s what she had to say about it.
I want to just say that I enjoyed immensely the time I spent with you and the other educators for The Vocal Instrument 101 Live. The information about vocal anatomy solidified things that I have been trying to understand on my own by reading through texts, and articles, because I do not have the time to go back to school for a pedagogy degree but I still want the info!
I have to give another shout out to Shannon Coates for her Vocal Instrument 101. Her simple and straightforward way of explaining vocal anatomy and processes has made it so much easier to explain principles to students. I’ve taught for over 20 years and this course gave me new tools to help students find “head voice” and to understand the functional differences for contemporary technique.
I can’t recommend it enough.
So much more than a class: interesting conversations, stimulating materials, connections with new colleagues, new approaches, and deeper learning. The support I felt as a teacher to share vulnerabilities was incredible, and deeply meaningful. I feel challenged and invigorated and grateful.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS
(you know, with details)
YOU ARE A VOICE TEACHER WHO WANTS TO GET SOME CONTINUING EDUCATION
And you don’t have time to take a course that will have you sitting in front of your computer from now until the end of time. You also don’t need to know everything there is to know about reading a spectrogram because, while it may be nice to throw around some formant-love in the studio, YOU know what’s WAY nicer:
To be able to confidently diagnose and address technical issues in the singers you work with AND to have the teaching skills and tools you need to ensure the deepest learning possible in the singers you work with.
OH. And you want to do this continuing education LIVE and with a group of your peers so you’re motivated to GETITDONEALREADY (unlike, say, those five DIY courses you have sitting in your inbox that you may or may not finish by the turn of the century (ASK ME HOW I KNOW ABOUT THOSE DIY COURSES. ahem.)).
YOU’RE GONNA’ LOVE JOINING YOUR PEERS
in a super-interactive online lecture-style class (think: modules and note-taking and prezis and Q&A) that is designed for your optimum learning (think: shorter modules + engaging lectures (or, as engaging as I can make them (which: pretty danged engaging, #ifidosaysomyself)) + group discussion + practical application + workbooks for alllll the doodlenotes you need to take to stay engaged), AND HAS BUILT-IN BIO BREAKS FOR YOUR COMFORT AND ENJOYMENT.
YOU ARE REGISTERING FOR The Vocal Instrument 101 LIVE because
you haven’t done an anatomy and physiology course or read a voice ped text in a looooong time (or, you know, EVER) and, in addition to reviewing that info (or, you know, learning it for the first time), you want to know about some of the current info that’s out there.
(Shhhh … don’t tell anyone: we will definitely talk about formants. But not in that, YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND FORMANTS OR YOU CAN’T POSSIBLY BE DOING IT RIGHT kind of way.
More in that, FORMANTS ARE A THING AND IF YOU KNOW HOW TO SHAPE A VOCAL TRACT AND BLEND REGISTERS? YOU ALREADY KNOW HOW TO WORK WITH FORMANTS SO YOU’RE WELCOME FOR THAT kind of way.)
AND/OR YOU ARE REGISTERING FOR The Vocal Instrument 101 LIVE because
you want to feel confident that when you’re observing your students, you’re actually taking in the information you need to be able to accurately and consistently figure out what’s going on with them AND to develop exercises and tools ON THE SPOT to address what’s going on with them in an efficient and results-oriented way.
ALSO? You want to get that many steps closer to really, TRULY understanding registration, and vocal tract shaping for tonal outcomes, and flow versus pressed phonation, and nasal versus twang sounds, and EXACTLY WHICH PART IS CONTRIBUTING TO WHAT SOUND ALREADY!
FAQs
WILL IT BE RECORDED SO I CAN PURCHASE NOW AND WATCH AT A LATER DATE?
Nope a doodle. This is an exclusively LIVE event. Aaand … it’s the only one I’m doing in 2022. Because … The VoicePed UnDegree starts in September!
FINANCES ARE SUPER-TIGHT FOR ME AT THE MO’ SO I’M PRETTY SURE I CAN’T DO THIS … AND I AM SAD ABOUT IT.
The Vocal Instrument 101 LIVE and many of my other courses and classes are available via payment plan. I also offer purchasing power parity pricing for folks who live in countries with low purchasing power.
