say the things – language use in the studio …

[make 2020 your year to join the #voicepedrev]

Of allllll the things we do in the voice studio, our language choices may be one of the most important. (Or it may not be. I’m not going to verify this statement with any double-blind studies written up in peer-reviewed journals so …)

And -WOULDN’T YOU KNOW IT?- I’ve written a few blog posts about this. And collected a few visuals. And done a couple of FB Lives.

And now? I’m putting some of them together in this one, handy-dandy reference blog post. (Or, in what my husband would call, a “filler episode”*. Ahem.)

Now, THAT’s interesting.

Yeah. That title reads like I’m talking about how interesting this blog post has been so far. When, IN FACT, I am talking about how to inspire singers in the studio by changing the way we AND THEY observe and evaluate their singing and process. SO. Here’s the how and why for saying NOW THAT’S INTERESTING a lot more often in the studio:

Not this, that.

Friends, one of the simplest and most effective language choices we can make in the studio is to transition from ‘negative’ and/or ‘fixed mindset’ language to ‘positive’ and/or ‘growth mindset’ language.

Here’s what the transition looks like in our thoughts about ourselves as musicians:

(thank you Sand Dollar Music!)

And here’s what that transition can look like in terms of the language we use in the studio:

(thank you Eden Casteel for whipping up this graphic pour moi!)

What do you think, friends? Wanna’ get on board with the #voicepedrev? Got a great article or idea about how to change your language so your teaching is even more effective in 2020?

TELL ME ALL THE THINGS!

oh. and go on and teach your face off, will ya?

* NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH FILLER EPISODES. I TEND TO ENJOY THEM BECAUSE I LIKE THE BACKGROUND INFO AND THE CHANCE TO RELAX AND BREATHE FOR A HOT SECOND KNOWING THAT NOTHING TERRIBLE IS GOING TO HAPPEN** AND ALSO, I NEED TO GRAB A SNACK SOMETIMES AND FILLER EPISODES ARE THE PERFECT TIME TO DO THAT WHEN YOU’RE BINGE-WATCHING A SHOW. #sotheresthat

** Yes. I prefer my entertainment to come with a whole lot of drama. #whydoyouask?

***#spoileralert: I so totally DID NOT write a daily blog as per Seth Godin’s recommendation.

**** #spoileralert part deux: I so totally DID NOT do regular Tuesdays at Ten FB Lives in the second half of 2019. And I’m okay with owning that I’m not really into doing things ON A REGULAR BASIS, even if *I* am the one who says I should. #dontmakemeroutine #routinesmakemeitchy #spontaneityFTW
